Day 104: Summer’s For Music – Parquet Courts’ “Light Up Gold”

by Tom Noonan

Parquet Courts’ second album Light Up Gold is so furiously focused and punk-paced that it always feels like singer Andrew Savage might get left in its wake.  Really, his vocals sound like they were recorded in some sweaty, smoke-invaded karaoke bar, and he’s spending most of the album trying to keep up with the words as they scroll across the screen.  He’s the band’s nuclear reactor getting ready to blow.  It might not always sound great, but few albums get this kind of energy right.
